Henry’s relationship with the ACLU began in Tennessee as a high school student fighting for fairness and justice for LGBTQ+ students in Tennessee public schools. He testified in front of legislative committees and shared his lived experience with lawmakers to halt discriminatory legislation and found a love for legislative advocacy.
After spending a gap year as an LGBTQ+ organizer for the ACLU of Tennessee and serving on the boards of GLSEN Tennessee and Gender Spectrum, Henry moved to Colorado to attend the University of Denver. His degrees in Political Science and Communication Studies focused on conservative political thought, evangelical rhetoric, and settler colonialism in the state of Colorado. He was the first in his family to receive a college degree, graduating cum laude.
Henry returned to Tennessee to work as a policy strategist focused on anti-transgender legislation. He focused on community organizing, lobbying, and spearheading the affiliate’s efforts on anti-LGBTQ+ legislation while advising and assisting on other issues facing Tennessee in the legislature. He worked alongside community members, directly impacted individuals, and lawmakers to defend the rights of all Tennesseans and create positive, lasting change in the legislature and beyond.
Now, Henry is thrilled to rejoin the ACLU family and bring his past experiences and knowledge to promote and champion the mission and values of the ACLU of Montana as the lobbyist. He believes his skillsets in communicating across ideological spectrums, connecting on shared values, and understanding the ins and outs of policy development will serve to defend the rights of oppressed Montanans.
Outside of work, Henry enjoys anything outdoors, reading, and spending time with his cats, Miso and Mochi.
